Lives In Balance™
A systematic approach to the treatment of eating disorders.
The Boswell Center for Life Enrichment has created a program
designed to surround the individual with support from all disciplines:
individual psychotherapy, life coaching, nutrition therapy, family
therapy, and advanced visualization techniques.
Lives In Balance™ was designed in response to the research-driven idea
that Eating Disorders have multifaceted causes and concerns. The
once-a-week model of psychotherapy simply does not work. The client
is left feeling demoralized and as though she has failed, when
in reality, the treatment has failed. In addition, bringing all
sources of support under one roof helps the patient in two ways:
the team can communicate effectively, thereby significantly shortening
treatment time, and the patient does not have to expend extra
time and energy going to appointments in different settings.
The goal of this program is to build on client strengths, and to help create a hopeful image of the future. While we acknowledge that Eating Disorders have serious physical consequences, there is not much focus on symptoms. This is because we believe that creating a positive vision of a healthy self is the best way to "crowd out" eating disorder symptoms.
Our practitioners have all sought out superior training in their fields, and have extensive knowledge of Eating Disorders. Dr. Boswell has specialized in Eating Disorders for over 12 years, and directs the treatment team using her knowledge and experience.
How does Lives In Balance™ work?
Dr. Boswell realizes that eating disorder clients have unique
needs. Therefore, the program creates a very supportive environment,
with a specific understanding of the challenges faced by a person
with an eating disorder.
- When you come to The Boswell Center, you will meet with your lead therapist. She will be your main source of support in that you will have daily e-mail contact with her, and collaborate on the most effective course of treatment for you.
- You will also meet with your nutritionist, who has extensive knowledge regarding nutritional issues involved in the successful resolution of Eating Disorders. Your resting metabolic rate will be measured with the MedGem™ (an FDA-approved device that accurately determines the number of calories your body burns at rest). This is important in that it helps to determine with a great deal of confidence how your body will react to the food plan you and your nutritionist agree upon. This is pivotal in restoring a metabolism that is likely impaired by disordered eating, and in helping you learn to trust your body. You will also receive frequent e-mail contact with your nutritionist to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your food program.
- In many instances, psychoactive medication is a very helpful adjunct to the treatment of Eating Disorders. Depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance often coincide with disordered eating, and the right medication can significantly increase your ability to benefit from treatment.
- Many times, it is helpful to have your family members involved in your treatment so that they may know what you are going through and how to help. If this is the case, a highly trained family therapist will become part of your treatment team.
- Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is a cutting-edge visualization technique that has been shown to be very effective in reducing the effects of trauma in a short number of sessions. Recently it has been applied to the treatment of Eating Disorders (e.g., body image distortion, "stuck" fears about eating) with considerable success. The Boswell Center has a psychotherapist with the highest available level of EMDR training.
In addition to the above, your treatment team meets on a weekly basis to assess your progress and devise creative solutions to any problems you may encounter in your treatment. We also have excellent relationships with physicians who approach Eating Disorders in a sensitive, non-judgmental manner.
We will print out the necessary documents for you to submit to your insurance company so you can get the most reimbursement possible from your insurance company.
